01. How do I install or upgrade reader manager?

Run the install program 'ReaderManager-Install.exe.' from the CD supplied with your reader.

If you already have ReaderManager installed, run the program ReaderManager-Upgrade.exe.

Follow the installation instructions given in section 3 Installation in the Reader Manager Manual.

 

02. I have a new MARS reader, what do I do now?

This step is ONLY required for MARS type readers. Such as the MARS 1, 2, 4, 6, and 24.

1. You will need the following equipment to setup a reader.

- DC Voltmeter
- Antenna tuning block and trim tool
- Normal powered tag

 

2. Open the Reader Setup tool as described in section 6.8 Reader Setup of your Reader Manager Manual.

Follow instructions provided by the wizard, selecting and configuring the number of axis Groups, selecting, tuning and testing the antennas used with the reader.

Save the configuration to the reader.

 

03. How to connect ReaderManager to a reader?

Connect an Ethernet cable or USB cable to the reader as described in the reader manual. Apply power to the reader.

Wait approximately 40 seconds for the reader to start-up.

Either select the reader from the Dynamic Reader list on the Connection menu as described in 5.1.2 Opening a Dynamic Connection of your User Manual, or create a static connection as described in section 5 Managing Connections.

 

04. My PC does not recognise my reader at all

The USB port on the PC is broken
- Use another USB port known to be working.

USB port has temporarily failed
- Power cycle the PC.

The reader is faulty
- Check the reader on two other PCs.
- If no PC shows any response at all to the USB cable being plugged in then it’s faulty.
- Send a service report using the Service Form.

 

05. How do I upgrade the software on the reader?

See section 8 Upgrading Reader software of the Reader Manager Manual.

 

06. My reader is not behaving as expected, how do I gather diagnostic information which can help fix my reader?

Use the System Report Tool as described in section 11 Reporting a Problem of the Reader Manager Manual.

 

07. I’ve forgotten what the IP address of my reader is, how do I connect to it?

Connect to the reader via the USB interface. Then see section 4.1.2 Connection Menu of the Reader Manager Manual.

If the USB interface you may use the Find Readers tool described in section 9 Find Readers Application of the Reader Manager Manual.

 

08. I cannot connect to my reader - Reader is not shown on connection list.

The reader was not in the operational mode when you connected a communication cable and/or opened the connection menu.

Plug in the communication and power cables. Wait for about 1 minute after you apply power to the reader. The green Axis LED must be permanently lit and the green Channel LEDs off. Open the Connection menu in the ReaderManager. Find the reader you want to connect to on the list.

 

09. How do I restore the reader to its default settings?

Open the Reader Settings tool.

Click the Set Factory Defaults button. A dialog box will be displayed. It provides options to set the saved settings, antenna selections and network settings back to their factory defaults.

Click the OK button to apply the changes, the reader will be automatically reset. When the reader reboots you will need to re-connect to it.

 

10. How do I change the network settings on a reader?

Open the Configuration System tool as described in section 6.1 Configuration System of the Reader Manager Manual.

Changing the Customer ID field will change the name of the reader as displayed on the dynamic connections menu.

Click the Network Settings tab to set a fixed IP address or to obtain an IP address from a DHCP Server.

 

11. How do I set a tag to Normal Powered mode?

Open the Console. Right click in the Message log area and ensure that Show Tag Replies is ticked.

Place a tag on the reader; you should see a response from the tag.

From the Reader Configuration menu select Config_Normal_Powered_Tag.

You should get a response from the reader with the data value equal to 6000.

A typical response will look as follows: Reader Manager Guide Page 3 of 68 40-10-006-DOC 21/02/2008 Info,Reply:Timestamp 7fff, LockPointer 0004, Manufacturing e005, SpecificID 000f8ff5, GroupID 2000, ConditionalID ffff, Configuration 6000, ReadAddress 0006, Data: 6000

Remove the tag from the antenna.

From the Reader Configuration menu select ClearAll

 

12. How do I get the ReaderServer version of my Network based reader?

Connect to the reader then from the Help menu select About Reader Manager.

A dialog box will be displayed showing the version numbers for; ReaderManager, ReaderServer, reader operating system, Linux kernel and the Readerdata file.
